The author, lately of the Alberta Court of Appeal is the author of various articles and textbooks including: An Introduction to the Law of Contracts; Words that Bind; and Systematic Advocacy. He is lead author of the annual Civil Procedure Handbook, and of the Civil Procedure Encyclopedia. As well, Justice Côté has given the Bar and students countless lectures on a host of topics.

About The Author

Jean E. Côté has experienced an outstanding career as a lawyer, teacher, writer and judge, and has been a leading voice in his chosen profession for over 50 years. Known to have an exceptionally acute mind and outstanding memory, he willingly shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with both associates and students alike.
His education began with an Honours B.A. from McGill University, continuing with an L.L.B. from the University of Alberta and a graduate degree, a B.C.L., from the University of Oxford. Jean was one of the first set of law clerks at the Supreme Court of Canada, clerking to Justice Martland.
From 1966 to 1987 he practised law with Hurlburt Reynolds Stevenson & Agrios and their successors. In 1984 he became Queen's Counsel. Then he served for almost 28 years as a Justice of three Courts of Appeal: Alberta, the NWT and Nunavut.
An avid reader and writer, Jean has prepared courses for the Faculties of Law and Extension at the University of Alberta, Bar Admission, the Legal Education Society of Alberta, and the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice.
An author of over 1700 written judgments and 14 books, his style remains simple, clear and concise, walking the reader through some very complicated subjects.
Jean Côté is a recipient of the University of Alberta's Distinguished Alumni Award, two Canadian medals and two lifetime awards from the Legal Education Society of Alberta. He was most recently awarded the University of Alberta's most prestigious award, an Honorary Doctorate of Laws.
